Université Laval Tuition Exemption Scholarship for International Doctoral Students

Applications open Partially funded?

About this scholarship

An exemption from the extra tuition that international students pay, for every international student admitted full time to a regular doctoral programme at Université Laval in Québec City. Recipients pay the same tuition as Québec students. Most teaching is in French.

Funding type

Covers: the supplementary tuition fees charged to international students, so you pay the Québec rate. At 2026-2027 rates, a doctoral year of 24 credits costs CAD 3,542.72 with the exemption and CAD 16,378.88 without it. Rates for the next year are not published yet. Length: 8 sessions of enrolment, or until you reach the 90 or 96 credits of your programme. Does not cover: the Québec-rate tuition, health insurance (CAD 900 a year in the Laval estimate) or living costs.

Language requirements and exemptions

Language test required TCF or TEF DELF or DALF Other test Waiver possible

Most courses at Laval are in French. If you did neither primary nor secondary school in French, the French proficiency page says you must take the TCF tout public after applying, no more than two years before your application. The admission requirements page says the TCF may be required and that DELF, TFI and TEF results from the past two years with a written part may be accepted. Depending on the programme, passing the TCF can be a condition of admission or of graduation.

University admission details

Required before applying?

There are two steps. First apply for admission to a doctoral programme and accept the offer. Then send the BBAF online exemption form. The general deadline for international applicants for autumn 2027 is 1 February 2027. Some doctoral programmes set other dates, so check your programme page. The time is not stated. The exemption form must reach the BBAF before the end of the session: 31 December for autumn, 30 April for winter and 31 August for summer. Late or incomplete forms are refused, and the BBAF advises sending the form as soon as you are admitted, ideally before the session starts. The scholarship page names no year and says the award is offered at all times. For your study permit file, the BBAF sends a letter confirming eligibility within two weeks if you ask by email. The admission form for autumn 2027 opened on 15 August 2026.
