About this scholarship
A fully funded 5-year PhD in science and technology at OIST in Okinawa, Japan. Open to all nationalities, and you can apply with a bachelor's or a master's degree.
Funding type
Covers: full tuition, a yearly salary of about 2.6 million yen in the first year that goes up to about 3.6 million yen, travel and moving costs to Okinawa, and conference travel. Does not cover: rent for campus housing (about 18,000 to 21,600 yen a month).

No written exam. If you are shortlisted (late December 2026) you join an online interview workshop between 18 January and 7 February 2027. Final results come out in mid February 2027. You can start in May 2027, September 2027 or January 2028.

Application steps
Look at the list of OIST professors and check who is taking PhD students. Apply online at graduateschool.oist.jp before 15 November 2026, 11:59 pm Japan time. Pay the 5,000 yen application fee. You can only submit after two of your recommendation letters are in, so ask your professors early.
