About this scholarship

An English-taught MSc/PhD program in molecular biology in Göttingen, Germany, for bachelor's graduates from Germany and abroad. Master's students without other funding receive a monthly Max Planck stipend, and strong students can move to the PhD after the first year.

Funding type

Covers: a stipend of EUR 992 a month for the whole master's phase, plus up to EUR 100 a month for health insurance if you are not covered by a home or family insurance. The stipend is not paid if you already have a comparable scholarship from another source, such as DAAD or a government program. In the PhD phase students are usually employed and funded by the institution that hosts their project. The program also pays private liability insurance in the first year, and has budgets for conferences and research stays abroad. Does not cover: the semester fee of about EUR 400, which depends on the type of scholarship. The program puts living costs in Göttingen, with a dormitory room and health insurance, at about EUR 900 a month.

University admission details

Admission included in application?

The portal is open until 15 January 2027, 24:00 CET. Courses start in October 2027, and the orientation program starts in mid-September. The admissions page says reference letters arriving after 17 January cannot be considered, and the application page says 18 January, so use the earlier date. If a letter is late, your application is judged without it. Selection has three stages: review of the online applications in mid-January, a 15-minute online interview on 25 or 26 January 2027 for about 15 to 20 percent of applicants, and two 30-minute online interviews on 8 to 10 February 2027 for about 60 candidates. Results come by the end of February. The 15-minute interview has short questions on molecular biology, biochemistry, structural biology, cell and cancer biology, and methods. The first year has 90 credits of lectures, methods courses and three lab rotations. Then you write a six-month master's thesis, or with good exam results you go straight to a three-year PhD. You may also apply to the Neuroscience MSc/PhD program in Göttingen, which has a similar structure.
